VR experts install LED lights in the VR head display to realize the amazing FOV illusion

The VR community has a large number of VR experts who like to play with devices. A few days ago, a VR enthusiast installed additional LEDs for his ValveIndex to simulate a wider field of view. According to me, the effect is "absolutely incredible".

In the past decade, VR head displays have made great progress: they are getting smaller, thinner and more functional. Despite this, the field of view has not made much progress so far, and still remains between 90 degrees and 120 degrees. This is related to the challenges of lens design and other compromises of head display design.

For example, Andrew Bosworth, the chief technology officer of Meta, once explained that increasing the field of view of Quest equipment requires a high price in terms of performance.

But in the VR community, VR professionals are actively exploring. For example, ShodahVR. He tried an unusual solution: use the ambient light in the VR head display to simulate a wider field of view.

ShodahVR integrates a series of LEDs for its Valve Index head display. They reproduce the color of peripheral images rendered by SteamVR. When wearing the head display, it will produce the illusion of a wider horizontal field of view. He named it VR Ambilight.

According to ShodahVR, he has completed the VR Ambilight test and found the effect incredible. He pointed out that it added a lot of "presence".

Next, he plans to add a layer of gray plastic (called diffuser) to the LED to soften the light and prevent the lens from reflecting. Later, he plans to print a sealed interface module with a 3D printer. For power supply, Shodah plans to use the USB port on the front of VR head display.

However, it should be noted that using ambient light is not a new concept. Microsoft has been conducting research since 2016. But perhaps because of different types of trade-offs, this idea did not catch on. For example, it will increase the weight and heat of VR head display.
